Changing a diaper these days has become a challenge for me. Bryson has been walking for almost a month. Since he began walking, he doesn't like to be still for long for anything. To keep him still to change a diaper can be very challenging. Dad has a great excuse now not to change his diaper, he can't keep him still long enough. Not only do I have to make sure I have everything needed for changing a diaper but I also have to have a couple of "distractions" to use to get the diaper changing accomplished. Here is a few of my tricks.
- Big Sister - Having his big sister around to talk to him while I am changing his diaper seems to work sometimes. She will tickle him, talk to him, make faces at him, anything that will help me keep him still while I change his diaper. He seems to enjoy having her around as a distraction.
- Sing - I sometimes sing a silly song that he likes. He concentrates on listening to me sing and he doesn't even realize that he is being still long enough for me to change his diaper.
- Location - I sometimes get in the floor with him to change his diaper. He sometimes gets upset when I pick him up and take him to the changing table. If I get in his play area with him, he doesn't usually get upset when I lay him down and diaper duty seems to go smoothly.
- Remote Control - My son loves remote controls. As a last resort, when it comes to keeping him distracted for almost anything I can just hand him a remote control and he immediately lays still and focuses on the remote. He knows exactly which buttons changes the channel. I always have one close by the diaper changing area.
- Stand Up Change - As a last resort and it has happen several times this week, I change his diaper while he is standing up. As long as he stands still, it works pretty well. Bryson doesn't like to lay down on baby changing stations in public areas. He cries every time. It doesn't matter the surroundings, changing stations in any public bathroom is always a scary place for him. This is where the stand up change began.
With babies, it amazes me sometimes the lengths moms have to go to to get the simplest things accomplished. The simplest things can be such a challenge. I would have never thought changing a diaper would be such a great accomplishment but some days I feel that way.
